Overview of Cameron Highlands

The Cameron Highlands region was initially stumbled upon in 1885 by William Cameron, a British government Surveyor, who encountered "A fine plateau with gentle slopes, shut in by loftier mountains" while hacking through dense jungle on a mapping expedition. The idea of establishing a hill station in the area was first proposed in 1888 by Sir Hugh Low, a resident of Perak, who suggested it might serve as a suitable retreat and farmland.

For a considerable period, there was little development, until 1925 when Sir George Maxwell visited the area, more than 40 years after Cameron's original discovery, and it was decided to develop it into a hill station. Cameron Highlands became a sanctuary for the British stationed in Malaya, offering respite from the hot and humid tropical climate of the lowlands.

Situated at 1524 meters above sea level, Cameron Highlands enjoys a cool climate, with temperatures rarely exceeding 25°C and dropping below 10°C. In 1929, John Archibald Russell, the son of a British administrative officer, initiated a tea plantation, which is now renowned as the BOH Tea Plantation (BOH stands for Best of Highland). Another tea plantation, known as Bharat Tea Plantation in the Cameron Valley brand, was established in 1932 by the Shuparshad family. Cameron Highlands is the primary producer of fresh vegetables such as carrots, chilies, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, eggplant, tomatoes, green beans, as well as various fruits including strawberries, apples, oranges, watermelons, and more. Additionally, it boasts a variety of flowers like roses, carnations, and jasmine.

Located in Pahang, the largest state in Peninsula Malaysia, Cameron Highlands occupies an area of 443 square kilometers, making it the smallest district in Pahang. Positioned near the northern border, it comprises three main townships at different elevations: Ringlet, Tanah Rata, and Brinchang. Towards the northern part of Malaysia, there are also smaller towns such as Tringkap, Kuala Terla, and Kampung Raja.

BOH 代表 Best of Highland。
